Worst Pre-Workout Foods:

  1. Trail Mix: due to the high fat content and the dried fruit, it can leave a lump in your stomach. It should be consumed 3-4 hours PRIOR to working out (not PRE-workout).

  2. Cheese: High fat and calcium content can also lead to GI issues during a workout. Try to avoid PRE workout and eat post-workout instead or 2 hours prior.

  3. Chips or Chips and Salsa: Too processed and can cause heartburn which leads to a bad workout. The salt also causes water retention.

  4. Anything Fried: well duh….you should never eat it anyways. The grease causes gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea

  5. Whole Milk Yogurt: The high fat AND protein could cause issues in the gut and is best to consume low-fat or non-fat prior or Greek yogurt following!

  6. Burger: High protein is bad prior to a workout

  7. Cruciferous Veggies (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower) can leave you bloated and gassy (thanks to the sulfur in it) because they take longer to digest.

  8. Beans (obviously)….can cause bloating and gas which is not fun during a workout because they ferment in the intestines and stay there

  9. Carrageenan: can cause inflammation

  10. Creamy sauces and dressing: Also cause inflammation due to the types of oil, preservatives, etc. that inflame you which is not what you need post exercise.
